Favorite External Back-up drives.

I use these as back-up storage drives for my Sample libraries. I use them in pairs using the second drive to manually back-things up as needed. I like the large storage capacity and the price point. I have a couple dozen external drives including SSD. The speed of these via USB 3 gets the job done. The security factor, knowing if something happens my work is safe & backed-up, is worth the price of admission. That said in the last 15 years I haven't a single external drive fail. I'd like to think it's because I take of my equipment and don't move these around. I use SD cards when I need to transport my Beats, Samplea and DAW sessions. But it's more likely down to chance. I got thumb drive that was DOA once (irrelevant) Anyway, I make/produce music for a living, if something happens to my files there's no insurance that will make-up for the 1000s of hours I spend chopping/flipping and editing Samples or stacking/layering and Sound designing. Latet the files are used during beat creation. I have a system that depends on having reliable drives I also have over 100K Rare Vinyl LPs digitized on other drives. WD is my go-to for externals but I've used multiple different brands over the years. Okay let's run through the tags. These are not portable drives. I guess you could put them in a case but nah. Power source is an adapter with a barrel that plugs into the drive. My project studio at home is all Win/PC but I also use Mac's at a commercial studio. Compatibility depends on how you format the drives. The Mac computers at my commercial studio are connected to Lacie & Glyph drives for the most part. When I transfer files back & forth, I use an SD card reader/writer and my Akai MPC Files are universal. If you use these with a Mac format the drive for Mac OS. Using a PC format the drive for Windows. These aren't backwards compatible. You can't plug one into a Mac, eject the drive and plug the same drive into a Windows PC. It's one or the other. Is it technically possible with dual boot and all that, probably but you should format the drive for the system you're using it with. Format accordingly. Drive size 12TB or 24TB it's up to you. I like the lego style drive design, those are the coolest drives I have style wise. These are fingerprint magnets. But they look fine. See included photos. Hopefully that covers the tags, The drives are good I'll continue to grab these as needed. Good luck.

Reliable fast, easy to set up

My computer was running out of space with all my family videos and pictures. When you get to the end of a hard drive capacity, it slows your computer.I attached this external hard drive with huge capacity and redirected the file destination for video, pictures, and documents to this drive.Freeing up space on the internal hard drive revive the life of my computer. Things no longer crawl when I click on something. It was a pretty easy installation and it’s pretty straightforward. There’s nothing to it other than plugging in a USB cord to your computer..I have mine sitting on the side of my computer tower it’s sleek and looks good.Definitely worth the value of hard drive capacity that you get. I have it running on Windows 10 and it is Windows 11 compatible as well.

WD 8TB Elements Desktop - Reliability, Easy to Use, Super Fast Transfer Data, Worth The Value

Western Digital 8TB Elements Desktop is a great external hard drive. Purchased WD 8TB Elements to backup my computer system. When I received the product, it was easy to install by following on screen instructions, it came with WD software to begin transferring my data immediately. Instead, I chose WD Acronis True Image software, which offers the ability to: Back up operating systems, applications, settings and individual files on Windows and macOS. Everything worked well together and there was no data loss on my windows 10 backup. The WD elements drive sits on my desktop and acts as add-on-storage to my computer. The WD 8TB is portable and is incredibly fast, taking 1hr 30min to back up my computer. WD 8TB Desktop External Hard Disk Drive-3.5 Inch, USB 3.0 with Automatic Backup, 256 Bit AES Hardware Encryption, Password Protection, Compatible with Windows & Mac, Portable HDD. Highly recommend Western Digital 8TB Elements Desktop because easy to use, reliable, fast transfer of data, and provides peace of mind.

USB3 cable problem w Mac Sequoia

Using as a 4T backup. Wouldn't mount so troubleshooting online suggested it was the cable. I switched it with different external drive cable I already own and it was just fine

My review after 9 months of use.

I bought the Western Digital Elements 18TB external hard drive about 9 months ago, and so far it's been a flawless experience. Installation was an absolute breeze: Plug in the USB 3.0 connector to your computer, plug in the power, and it should be instantly ready to go. No formatting or initialization necessary. It will automatically select the next drive letter for itself. It really could not be any easier. After 9 months, I've learned to live with a few small annoyances I've noticed. These are things that really don't bother me, but may bother others, so I'll mention them.1. When it does its self-maintenance, or first spins up after being in sleep mode, it makes a bit of noise. It's not loud and it's not often. It's kind of a brief vibration noise, and from what I've read, all external hard drives make this noise. If this is bothersome, I suppose I would recommend disconnecting the drive between uses, but again, for me this has not been even slightly a bothersome noise, and I barely notice it anymore.2. When I want to download something or access something from the drive, I have to wait about 20 seconds for the drive to start up and spin up to speed, which can be slightly annoying. I attempted to go into Windows (I am using Windows 11 by the way) settings and change it so that the drive never goes to sleep, but it goes to sleep in spite of changing that setting, so I'm thinking that something on the drive itself is putting it to sleep to preserve longevity. But other than those two things, I can't think of anything that might annoy someone. The drive still shows up as healthy. Every file I have accessed from the drive is still pristine, and all the games I have stored there still install just fine, so it is doing its job without any loss of data. Also data transfer speeds have been excellent, far better than I expected.
