Most tank exchange places only put about 15 lb in the 20lb tank. quick, easy, set price. If you take your 20lb take and have it refilled you pay for what you get and it takes a little longer. exchange services made it quick and easy to a tank of gas. exchanging is generally higher than then refilling. Based on information from a propane professional, from service and delivery to training firefighters. It is not save nor efficient to refill the 1 lb. bottles. I threw mine away because of this and that it did not work.

Ken and Dragonfly have got it nailed. If you are willing to read through 40+ comments you can read my review for the actual physics behind this. It is not possible to overfill the small tank from a big tank on a first go - the temperature drops in the big tank as the propane exits and leaves more space for the liquid to evaporate into (evaporating water makes your skin cold and evaporating alcohol makes it even colder, right?). As the temperature drops so does the pressure; meanwhile pressure is building up in the small tank as more and more of its space is filled and the remaining gas propane is trying to escape up into the big tank. The two tanks will reach equilibrium and the propane transfer will stop long before the tank is full - posters have reported between a third and a little over a half full (it depends primarily on the temperature of the two tanks, and to a lesser extent the amount of propane remaining in the big tank - which acts as a heat sink.If you are happy with one third of a bottle, there is nothing else you have to do and you cannot and will not overfill. Some of us have chilled the small bottle once (can get to 2/3 full) or even twice (can >easily< overfill). Dragonfly puts the big bottle in the sun or in warm water, which is too much trouble for me but same principle.If you do go for deliberately manipulating the temperature of one, the other, or both bottles, you can tell when it is approaching "full" (which still won't be truly full but it could be full enough so that if it then warms up, pressure could build up and release propane) because the hissing sound will start to taper. The moment you hear that hiss start to slow, it's as full as safety allows. Read my review for other safety precautions.
