Excellent evangelism course!
I was looking for material to use with high school students in an after school program and was thinking about using Mittelberg's Becoming A Contagious Christian, but then this came out. Perfect timing! I am a high school teacher, so I know what students are capable of. Many of our teens are pursuing a rigorous schedule of A.P. and I.B. classes, and while it is not necessary to be deeply academic to share your faith, it is absurd for us to treat our young people as if they were less capable than they are by offering them silly programming when it comes to their faith. Making Your Case For Christ is solid material from well-known, reliable leaders in evangelism and apologetics. There is an updated version of Strobel's modern classic The Case For Christ, which is great, but I am going to keep the focus of this review on the training materials. The DVD and print materials work well together. I have worked my way through the materials from the perspective of one who would be leading others through the course. What would I need to know next? If the materials referenced something in the DVD, would it really be there? Was content presented in the DVD expanded or reinforced in the print material? Did the print questions allow for deeper processing of the video components? The answers to all these are yes. The first point, therefore, is that the curriculum is easy to use.Strobel and Mittelberg, despite being heavy-hitters in evangelism and apologetics, and despite their location inside and on the grounds of a gorgeous theological library, never come across as heavy handed or unnecessarily academic. In fact, they go out of their way to show how sharing your faith is something anyone can do.The DVD is very good, with discussions between Mittelberg and Strobel and clips from the film The Case For Christ, yet the true gem may just be the written materials. They are laid out so that anyone can lead the discussion, and they contain excellent questions for sparking discussion. Perhaps the best aspect is the additional material for going deeper between sessions. This includes specific challenges for the participants in developing their own story and working on sharing it with others to relevant Scriptures to more stories from the authors. And story is the key to the whole thing. This curriculum is not just based on Strobel's story that has been told in both book and film. Its premise is that we all have a story about how we have come to know and follow Jesus, and that it is our own story that makes for the best witness. All in all, I highly recommend it and am looking forward to using it with many people.
